What we can learn about Harriet Tubman
On Saturday, January 17, children aged 5 to 12 will be able to learn about a woman who is important in American history, Harriet Tubman, about the cause of slavery, and about themselves too. The Learning to Like the World class at the Aesthetic Realism Foundation, in SoHo, NYC, 11 AM to 12:15 PM, will be titled: WHAT CAN WE LEARN ABOUT OURSELVES FROM HARRIET TUBMAN & UNDERGROUND RAILROAD?
Teachers Barbara Allen and Robert Murphy will be joined by Devorah Tarrow, Aesthetic Realism consultant and sociologist, and New York City public school teacher Barbara McClung, who will present this interactive workshop, which has been given at libraries, schools, and historical societies in the metropolitan area.
At the event, based on the education Aesthetic Realism, founded by the poet and critic Eli Siegel, children will learn about Harriet Tubman and have a chance to take part in a play about enslaved people escaping to freedom through the Underground Railroad. Every boy and girl attending will see how history can help them understand two purposes in all people, including themselves. The teachers ask: Does Harriet Tubman stand for our deepest purpose: respect for people? And does slavery arise from contempt, the feeling “You’re different from me, so you’re not a full human being with rights like mine. I’m somebody because I can look down on you”? And is there anything like that in us?
In this exciting children’s activity youngsters will learn about what Aesthetic Realism shows is the cause of slavery, contempt, and how contempt works to make ourselves big at the expense of other people. As young people see this, they are able to choose respect, to see that the feelings of other people are as real as one’s own and a means to learn about ourselves.
The class is in the third floor library of the Aesthetic Realism Foundation, (www.AestheticRealism.org). 141 Greene Street in SoHo, and is $7. Call (212)-777-4490.

A new exhibit paying tribute to the distinguished roles dogs have played in military history will open for a two-month run at the Bayside Historical Society (BHS) on May 17th, 2008. Featuring photographs, books, documents and media, the exhibit (designed by guest curator Jo-Anne Raskin) will highlight the forgotten canine heroes who were often trained and employed in wars as scouts to locate trip wires and booby traps, or as sentries to warn against advancing enemies. Opening reception will be at 12 p.m. on May 17th, and will include a color-guard presentation, dog-training demonstration, and community service award. Refreshments will be served. A $5 donation is requested. For more information, call (718) 352-1548, or visit www.baysidehistorical.org. Day of the event:
Unveiling of Exhibit
The Bayside Historical Society will unveil a new portable exhibit on Bayside history in conjunction with a discussion on the Queensboro Bridge by guest speaker Richard Melnick. To be held at 7 p.m. in the grand ballroom of the Castle in Fort Totten Park, the event is open to the entire community. Mr. Melnick, who is president of the Greater Astoria Historical Society (GAHS), will discuss why the Queensboro Bridge had an immediate and profound effect on the development of Queens upon its opening in 1909. He will also show images from the GAHS book, The Queensboro Bridge, written with the Roosevelt Island Historical Society as part of Arcadia Publishings Images of America Series. During the event, BHS will also introduce its new installation: a series of 10 panels that document different, but interrelated, aspects of Baysides history. The panels, which contain both images and text, include such topics as: Truck Farms, Bayside Fire Department, The Alley, Bayside Day, 1914, Actors Row, The Castle, Little Neck Bay, Lawrence Cemetery, Golf Courses, and Fort Totten. Because the panels are retractable, the exhibit is essentially portable, thereby allowing its seamless incorporation into BHS educational initiatives. The project was funded by the Queens Council on the Arts and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Light refreshments will be served at the event, which is free for BHS members. There is a $3 suggested donation for non-members. To reserve, call 718-352-1548.
