Exhibitions: Five Women Artists in New York
Exhibition Dates: May 7 – June 29, 2008
Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, Noon – 5pm
Curated by Ken Ratner. Participating Artists: Ellen Bradshaw, Lisbeth Firmin, Lynn Jadamec, Elinore Schnurr, Sonya Sklaroff. Adhering to the belief that artists should seek inspiration from their immediate surroundings, these painters have continued the precept established by Robert Henri and the Ashcan Schol. They invest great emotion and beauty in the life of everyday New York City. The exhibition gains in significance when one considers that women street painters have had a difficult time being accepted into the world’s notion of who should paint the urban environment. These five women bravely take to the street to formulate their own unique visions of the metropolis.

Every Person Can Tell You Something
Tuesday, May 13, 10:30 AM, the Pomonok Senior Center, 67-09 Kissena Blvd., Flushing, will host a presentation for senior citizens by Aesthetic Realism consultants Anne Fielding and Jeffrey Carduner, titled "Every Person Can Tell You Something about Yourself: Aesthetic Realism Shows How!"
Discussing a portrait of M. Roulin by Van Gogh, this presentation--in which seniors take part--shows how much the world is always in us, and how much we need to and can honestly like the world and people. Women and men will have a thrilling and highly beneficial time hearing this understanding of themselves, the world, other people--as the speakers show what Aesthetic Realism, the philosophy founded by the American poet and critic Eli Siegel, teaches: "The deepest desire of every person is to like the world on an honest basis."
Ms. Fielding and Mr. Carduner are popular speakers at metropolitan area centers. They tell what they teach women and men at the Aesthetic Realism Foundation, a not-for-profit educational foundation (www.AestheticRealism.org).

Like the World Through Science-Program for Kids
(11 AM-12:15 PM) Learning to Like the World class for boys and girls aged 5-12 will be “WE CAN LIKE THE WORLD THROUGH SCIENCE!” Young people will find out from teachers Barbara Allen and Robert Murphy how science can be used to like the world—which Aesthetic Realism shows is one’s deepest desire. Every child attending will see how—through the following principle, stated by Eli Siegel, educator and founder of Aesthetic Realism: “The world, art, and self explain each other: each is the aesthetic oneness of opposites.”
This event will show that the sciences are part of the same world we are hoping to respect and like, and are an exciting means of doing so. For instance, isn’t a fossil a oneness of past and present? As a tadpole swimming in a lake turns into a big green frog, are sameness and change surprisingly one? As youngsters see that these are the same opposites they are hoping to make sense of in themselves and in all people, everything takes on more wonder and meaning, and the whole world—including other people in it—is friendlier, more likable!
The class is in the third floor library of the Aesthetic Realism Foundation, www.AestheticRealism.org , 141 Greene Street in SoHo, and is $7. Call (212)-777-4490.
